The soccer (or ‘football’) World Cup begins this week. Like any major even on the international stage, the World Cup “brand” is enormous worldwide. FIFA, the soccer governing body, owns and protects trademarks related to the World Cup. Here are a few of those trademarks (in the U.S.):

No doubt, the WORLD CUP brand is worth a fortune in sales, merchandising and television rights worldwide. It is on par with the Super Bowl and Olympics. Despite marks that are made of very common and descriptive terms, FIFA has managed to protect its trademarks given their immense popularity. My favorite World Cup related trademark this year is the name of the official ball made by adidas:

The FIFA trademarks are generally registered for a large variety of goods and services. For example WORLD CUP 2010 is registered for all of the items listed below. While I am sure that FIFA has many licensees worldwide producing a selling a variety of products and services, I wonder if FIFA can demonstrate a bona fide intent to use the WORLD CUP 2010 name in the U.S. on “cleaning, polishing, scouring and abrasive liquids and powders for household use,”fixed towel dispensers made of common metals or their alloys,” “vacuum cleaner bags,” “fresh vegetables,” and some of the other items listed.
