According to USPTO records from the T.E.S.S. database, the USPTO received 485,444 new trademark applications in 2019*. This is a record for the number of US applications filed in a year, and represents an increase of approximately 5.8% over 2018’s number. 2018 had been the previous record number of applications.

The growth from 2018 to 2019 was approximately 4%, so the rate of increase actually grew last year, despite a new rule that went into effect in August 2019 requiring foreign applications to have US counsel that undoubtedly has some effect on the number of foreign applicants.

2019 also appears to have been a record year for the number of registrations issued: 312,117.

The number of applications grew each year in the last decade.

Furthermore, the USPTO trademark register is now larger than ever! As of this writing, there are 2,634,006 “live” USPTO trademark registration records in the TESS database.

In 2018, the USPTO saw approximately 469,500 new applications (in January 2019, my search found 458,103 by that number has likely increased due to some foreign filings and divided applications).

In 2017, the USPTO saw approximately 450,000 new applications (in January 2018, my search found 440,768 by that number has likely increased due to some foreign filings and divided applications).

In 2016, the USPTO saw approximately 389,000 new applications (in January 2017, my search found 399,620 but the number has likely increased due to some foreign filings and divided applications).

In 2015, the USPTO saw approximately 378,000 new applications (in January 2016, my search found 370,271 but the number has likely increased due to some foreign filings and divided applications).

In 2014, the USPTO saw approximately 345,000 new applications (In January 2015, my search found 336,239 but the number showing 2014 filing date has likely increased due to some foreign filings and divided applications).

With the rate of growth in application filings and registrations issued, the USPTO trademark register indicates continued and steady growth in the U.S. economy.
